Heat&Glo Cosmo 42 flame is blocked by metal front guard

Brand new fireplace. Can barely see the flames. Does anyone know if this black "guard" in front be taken off to fully view the flames? The remote setting is on the highest flame

If that "guard" is sitting outside the safety barrier screen, then it is in the wrong place.
it should be installed on the glass panel, behind the screen. It slides into the space on the bottom of the glass, between the metal frame and the glass panel.
