i have a 16-17 foot masonry chimney with insert connected to wrap insulated liner (1/2 inch insulation). The insulation begins on liner about 16 or 17 inches up from where it connects to insert. No block off plate in damper area, just some roxul. Outside of chimney runs through garage. With IR thermometer, the “hot spot” of the outside of chimney runs at about 100 degrees. This area corresponds to where top of smoke chamber is. 100 degrees seems a bit high to me.
I’m wondering what temperature would exist within masonry for 100 degrees to be seen outside.
Also, are retrofitting block off plates once insert is installed feasible?
