I have a heatilator GBIS38L the pilot light is lit and stays lit but I cannot get the wall switch to work. Replaced thermopile one year ago. Manufacture date is 1998, as is house. Any advice what to troubleshoot next?

Remove the switch plate & switch. Loosen the
screws & remove the wires. Touch the bare ends
of the wires together.
What happens?
