Hello, I am seeking information on how to convert from a ZC Martin Ind model SF36A to a stove insert. Where do I find information about what is compatible and the process of the install? Any answers or advice would be greatly appreciated. If there isn't an insert that will work, what would the process be of taking out the old and creating a space for a wood burning stove? House is about 1200 sq ft and would like to be able to heat the whole house. Thanks in advance!

Welcome. We should make sure we understand what you have first. Is this a wood or gas fireplace? Do you want to replace it entirely or are you looking to fit a wood-burning insert into it? If it is a vented gas fireplace it will have to be entirely replaced. At that point you might want to consider the alternative of replacing it with a freestanding stove.
Assuming you have a wood burning ZC:
A ZC is built so it will fit right up against wood studs, which is where you get the term 'zero clearance'. An insert usually goes into an existing stone/brick chimney so the existing fireplace provides your clearance. Changing from a ZC to a wood stove is common but you have to ensure that you have adequate clearance on all sides, esp. front & back, for the new stove. Each stove (out of hundreds) will have different clearances and different specs for the chimney. There is a good chance you can find a wood stove that will work with your existing chimney, if it is at code already.
