Hemlock Done Today

I decided to buck up then split this downed Hemlock today, the worst part was limbing this sucker up. I'm working on getting about two more cord of shoulder season wood for 2014 then my stacking areas will be full

Hemlock is a good shoulder season wood. It doesn't coal or last as long as hardwood in the stove, but it does burn hot, and is good starter. Your woods are beautiful! One of these days, I'm going to move away from the 8# maul and get a hydraulic splitter.

Good job zap.
I have about 3x the shoulder wood I did last year, and more to go. That probably won't be ready for this winter.
Took a walk around the property before all the undergrowth came up and found several damaged soft maple, lots of spruce, and a small oak that I didn't even know was there that fell over. All I have to do is go get it all.

Sounds like you have your work lined up, I plan on working later in the afternoon on more Hemlock this week, should be a hot one in the east.

I gotta get a splitter at the farm. And work like you do cut some and split it. I borrowed my friends splitter while I was up last and split most of the wood I had blocked up since the last time two years ago. Spent 11 hrs splitting one day then had to take a day off because I was so sore. Then another 11 hr day and finally a half day.

11 hours I could never do Billy. Split the rounds of Hemlock tonight, all the rounds were good. I still have a hunk of Maple down from years back, you can see in the picture where Mother Nature ripped it from the tree.

We also have two Quaking Aspen down that I would like to get by the end of July.

AC, at first it was getting ahead on the hardwood (did that) I finally decided it was ok to burn pine so once I get another 2 cord (that will give us about 6 cords of shoulder season wood) it's backto milling in the fall.

That birch I would never touch, we'll see what mother nature can do before I buy more stuff for the woods.

Nice work and boy do you have a ton of wood. I have only have half an acre and need to scrounge. I remember living further north and having tons of hemlock trees on the north sides of hills. The wooly adelgid killed so many of those beautiful dark trees. In fact I took my 12 year daughter backpacking in Shenandoah NP and all the big old hemlocks along the streams were dead. It was terrible. I imagine their absence changed the composition of those streams. Glad you have a healthy forest.

Jeff the Hemlocks are taking a hit here too. I did grab the rest of the downed Hemlock along with a downed White Pine today, looking for just under 1.5 cord which will give us around three years of shoulder season wood.
