I just realized that I have about $200 in Home Depot gift cards. I was going to go to Ace and buy a Fiskars axe (they are suppose to carry them according to their website), but I was going to go to Home Depot first to see what they carried as I needed a seed spreader anyhow.

Has anyone tried any of Home Depot's axes? Do they carry anything that anyone can recommend? If not, I guess I will just go to Ace. But I would rather just go to one store rather than two.

I'm sure they must carry the 8# mauls with the fiberglass handles. I also have a Fiskars but sometimes the maul comes in handy.

IMO, there are 3 axes 1) Old school Collins chopping ax 2) Fiskars splitting ax 3) every other ax in the world.


Lot's of axes are good, well made tools, but if you want to chop, find a Collins Ax. If you want to split, find a Fiskars.

Ok, that settles it, I am going with the Fiskar. I still need to go to Home Depot, so I will hold out hope that they carry a Fiskar...but it looks like I need to make a stop at Ace to pick one up. I'm going with the 28" Fiskar. Is there any reason I should consider the 23.5"?

What's the tool of choice to keep the axe sharp? Seems to be a bunch of choices out there and some of them seem like they could be crap.

I got a Fiskers axe sharpener. Works great! was less than $10

That depends on how fast you are swinging it! I do agree, the heaver is probably a better choice. I can't find the Fiskars axe anywhere around me. Ace be me does not carry it. Neither does Farm & Fleet, Tractor Supply, Menards, or Home Depot. Stinks - I bought a cheap get me by axe, and definitely got what I paid for

I got the 2.25lb with no intention of making it my primary splitting tool - I just wanted a small ax. I now do 99% of my splitting with it. I've never swung the 4lb splitting ax but it's probably bad@$$.

It’s anywhere from $10.00 to $20.00 cheaper depending on where you buy. It also has a 4lb head, works on the same principle, also has a lifetime warranty and most importantly (to me anyway) has a 36” handle. I’ve split many cord of Black Locust with it. I wouldn’t mind trying one of the Fiskars axes, just out of curiosity, but I think I would sorely miss the 36” handle that I’ve gotten used to.

I've been splitting firewood for 25+ years and the little Fiskars splitting ax is hands down the best splitting tool I've ever used. I've used the tru temper ax and it's OK but it doesn't compare to the Fiskars, IMO.

That's not completely accurate. What they call the "Pro" splitting axe is the lighter one, with a 28" handle. What they call the "Super" splitting axe is the heavier one, also with a 28" handle. Funny, I have the opposite problem -- the bit bites into the wood ... and stays there. Of course, that may be 'cuz I sharpened it with my angle grinder. All in all, though, it splits better than my old craftsman ax, but not near as well as the heaps of praise I've heard here (and elsewhere) for the Fiskars. I gotta get me a Fiskars, but as others have said, no local source. OSH carries the 2.5# chopping ax, but not the 4# splitting ax. I have to find my e-bay login (I despise e-bay, but I have an account from some time back) 'cuz the best price on the Fiskars seems to be there.

I have this fiskars-like splitting axe from Home Despot:

It's a 4lb head I think. Don't believe the bit about the "Indestructible" fiberglass handle or the permanent epoxy bonding, though; mine is sitting idle awaiting about my 4th or 5th try at re-epoxying the head on to the original handle. It works fine for the most part, but it does tend to get stuck in the tougher stuff despite the wings. Working it back out is what usually loosens the head. So for that stuff I pull out the 12lb Collins Axe (monster maul). It's ridiculous how light the axe feels after using the big boy.

I have that TruTemper splitting axe from Lowes. Works pretty well, and the price was right. I use it to split quarters into smaller pieces for my 1.6 cu ft stove. I don't have a Fiskars to compare it to, but I'd buy this one again if I had to.

Went to Sears.com and they have them. They are not in stock on line but if you enter your zip code they will tell you which Sears Stores have them. In my area (Orange County New York) the axes are in stock. Going shopping in the morning.
