Homemade wood pellets??? Thoughts???

I was just searching craigslist in my area and there is a guy that has homemade wood pellets from debarked cherry and oak for $175/ton.

Has anyone ever dealt with homemade pellets? Guy claims they burn like Hamers Hot Ones in his Lopi stove but that could be all BS. The price is right and I have a small house, even if they don't burn hot they would prob still work pretty well.

Thoughts????

I seen that add also, I would have to try a few bags before I invest in buying a ton or 2. You guys might have also seen the add on CL for 188 a ton in northern md from that flooring company, I was thinking about trying some of them.

Yes, I have burnt some homemade stuff. Problem( I saw) was density isn't high enough, But that depends on the mill/die used. Small mills don't have enough power to compress them through a tapered die. So density is lower. I also saw the pellets would crumble easily and lots and lots of fines. Because they aren't very dense, The heat was pretty low. They did burn pretty nice if you can deal with lower heat and excessive fines. Did I meantion lots and lots of fines? Even after screening I still had fines in the hopper and needed to clean often. Low density also means low durability. So the pellets fell apart and turned to dust in the hopper. The force the auger uses to move the pellets was enough to crumble them. I can get em cheap, But the travel to get them is pretty far. Dealing with the issues and the travel to get them makes it not as apealing to me. But if needed I have it as an option.

Cherry and Oak should make good clean pellets and might be worth a try. If you do try some, Please share the results and some pic's.

Yeah the guy in Fleetwood. I think I'm going to email him, always a little concerned about scams with craigslist. Wonder if his half ton price is half of 175 (hopefully). Also see if he will sell single bags.

I actually need a ton and prob will be getting that this weekend from HD or Lowes but I'd be interested in half a ton from Fleetwood if he checks out.

I'll also ask if he does this each year.

wanna try em but gonna get a ton of chow from hd too

i'm burning lignetics right now in a used , just installed in the basement 25pdv unit and get 23-25 hrs on a hopper but the ash looks kinda like a brillo pad , 1 bag left out of 6

I had Lignetics the last two seasons from TSC ($209) but they stopped carrying them. Cheat River, Stove Chow, and Premier Hardwood Pellets are my choices from bug box stores now all for $209.

If he wont sell you a bag for $5 then I would run. Its not like they are bundled into tons.

If you can't get 4-5 loose bags to try, I'd be very hesitant, even for a 1/2 ton. Takes a LONG time to burn 25 crappy bags.

There is so much more than compresing sawdust when it comes to making good pellets. Case in point...As bad as Infernos are, there has been a significant amount of research and development into making them. They are tested, conditioned, softened, hardend and a whole slew of science and bio chemistry goes into their production.
Chocolate chip cookies (with walnuts) and venison jerkey?....Homemade for sure.
Wood pellets?....You have absolutelty, positively gotta be purely effin' shitting me.

I think I'm kinda of close to you guys....I wouldn't mind trying a few bags....but NO WAY I would get a ton without trying a bag or two first.....

90 bucks for a half ton. Could get whatever you wanted together. A lot of orders right now so its about a week wait. Been making for 3 years selling for one year. Dust wise I feel there is less than you will find in any other bag you buy. I do this as a side business so I plan to do it a lot longer.

More info:
90 bucks for a half or 175 for a full. I use a 32 hp mill. Moisture content is 13% during production. They are bagged in 40 lbs bags.

13% ????????????????????????????

You loose over half the moisture content during production. End result should be about 6% or less. Even the best pellets I have seen have over 4% mousture content.
