Ok, I'm sure many thought "Open, dump pellets in, close, walk away..." ;lol

My insert can take about 50lbs of pellets. But you can't just dump in an entire bag; it'll take some, then start to spill over. I use a coal hod, fill it until the pellets start stacking, then use a small board to push them back into the hopper. Fill, push with board, fill.... you get the idea. It takes some time to get the stove full before the overnight or before going to work.

Anyone else have to do this? Just the nature of the insert?

I do that too, probably not as bad with a freestanding stove but the hopper does extend back from the lid about 6" and the pellets do need a bit of help when it's near full, i push them by hand.

Yep.

Fill. Push pellets back. Fill some more. Repeat until hopper full and/or bag empty.

My insert holds just over 40 lbs. My freestanding holds 80 and has larger opening, so easier to fill.

+1, works well until two nights ago, had a rather severe sneeze during the process and the mouth of the bag no longer lined up with the throat of the hopper -- took a while to sweep up all the pellets off the floor.
