Twice a year. Once at the end of January-February, and then once I have finished burning for the season. Last winter, my last brushing was early June.

It totally depends on the wood quality, quantity and how it is burned. The range is huge. Some of us can go every other year with a modern stove burning clean dry wood. Others burning poorly seasoned wood can have serious build up after a couple weeks of 24/7 burning. The chimney setup also has a lot to do with it. A tall outdoor chimney is going to build up creosote faster than an interior chimney, especially if the stove is burning poor wood.

Pretty normal, not great, but not bad either. What is more important is the accumulation up top where the flue gases have cooled down a lot.

For sure you can not necessarily go by someone else on how long before you clean the chimney. A good rule of thumb though is for new burners to be checking their chimneys monthly. Once you get so you can burn good wood, then most go annually. There are a few who have great wood and stoves and can go longer but do not let this sway you.
