I have an 80's era Vermont Castings Vigilant. It's in great shape, but over the past few years it's acquired various patches of a white/gray patina. I've also noticed some light exterior rust. What's the best method to restore this workhorse to its original black beauty?

The grey/white areas sound like the stove has been overfired. You could wirebrush down the entire stove, then paint with a good stove paint like StoveBrite metallic black.
