This is a cottage with wood stove Flue Pipe passing through the upper hallway floor. If the owner used a thimble to pass through the wall would the flue pipe then be legally installed?

I posted question on WETT forum and member replied that it did not meet requirements of 6.4.5 from B365. My copy of B-365 does not go up that high and I want to give my client the best advice possible.

Thanks for your time

Roger Frost

No just changing the passthru would not fix it because they used connector pipe not chimney or flue pipe. So even if the clearance requirements were met it still would not be legal. It needs to be changed to chimney pipe before it passes thru the floor.

If the owner used a proper wall thimble to reroute the flue through the wall and the thimble is for class A chimney pipe then the installation could be corrected that way. Straight up is better and may be cheaper though as long as it transitions to a ceiling support box and chimney pipe at the ceiling.

In addition, the double wall black pipe must be 6" from combustibles like sheetrock or wood. The class A chimney must be over 2" away. Some folks say that the portion of chimney in the upper level must be boxed in inside a framed chase, bg?

Not sure what Canadian code says, check with the local authority. In our area the chimney pipe passing through the second floor needs to be chased.
