Been readin over and over on here how to move heat upstairs. Normally I just relied on natural upward movement of hot air to keep the upstairs warm. Tried a little experament.
Cold air return to furnace about 15 from stove.

Small 8 inch fan on low on the other side of CA return.

The results.

It really does speed up warming the upstairs by quite abit.

I did the same thing Friday and showed the wife the toilet paper flowing with the warm air movement. She thinks I'm crazy.

I recently put a new wall up in our basement to divide off for our new family room. The other half of the basement is the garage.

Behind the stove in the new wall I put a wall vent low to the ground. Above in our upstairs floor is some old floor vents put in the house years ago.

Its amazing the amount of air sucked in thru that wall vent and whisked up and thru the floor vent into the upstairs.

I put my hand over the wall vent and it feels like a fan is blowing on a low setting.

The cool air from the wall vent at the floor level compared to the warm air above the stove makes for a big temp difference and lots of air movement.

I'm looking for a floor register with a fan built in that is reversible so that I can blow the cold first floor air down into the basement. I can see lots that will suck additional air, but am unsure whether they are reversible, I guess I could find a small enough box fan and just mount it between the floor joists underneath the register.

Down at the other end of my ranch style house which the house is like 65 feet long, I took out the wood furnace and duct work I had as that old wood furnace just ate tons of wood, but anyways after taking out the duct work I have vents to the basement I can open, so at the other end of my house I opened one in the bed room and took one of those circular type fans enclosed in a wire housing like the 9" size pointed it down to blow down into the basement and turned it on low, it is super quiet and moves alot of air.
