ok guys i will be installing my stove the right way tonight. vogelzang defender, got the stainless steel liner about an hour ago. Its going into a fireplace. Now where to put it... inside the fireplace or pulled out onto the hearth some. if i do onto the hearth some i will have to run a 90 deg elbow right off the stove to take it back into the opening and then another 90 to take it up into the chimney followed by the ss liner. do it this way or have that stove sitting in fireplace pulled out as far as i can with that stainless steel liner attaching. looking for the most heat out of it.

If you do this with a horizontal run, it needs 1/4" rise per foot of horizontal. !/2" rise is much better though. Also if you bring the stove out you have to question then if you have enough hearth for fire/ember protection.

The straight up setup would be a whole lot easier to sweep than the 2 - 90° setup.

Your owner's manual should describe all the required clearances in detail...including what's required in front of the stove.

How much clearance should there be from end of hearth?

That depends upon your stove. Your manual should specify what is required.

You said you were going to install it "the right way". If you don't read the manufacturer's documentation, how are you going to know what "the right way" is?

My advice is to read the manual.

After you get the liner hooked up, the next step is to stop heating the chimney. This will put more heat into the room.

Did you pick up some roxul insulation and sheetmetal too? The roxul gets packed around the chimney for a few feet top and bottom, just above the damper. A sheetmetal block-off plate just above the lintel with some more roxul behind it will finish the job.

All hooked up just started the fire. Will finish up Tom with the new sheet metal an the roxul. We ll see how she does tonight
