insert or stove for two side fireplace

Hello

I have a brick interior wall with a fireplace open in front and one side. Approx. 36" wide, 22" deep, 24" high. Haven't used it in years because of old chimney but I'd like to put a small stove or insert in there and connect it to a suitable chimney pipe. All the inserts I see look like they're flush with a wall. Is there an insert or even a small stove that would work here? Thanks for any thoughts.

It looks like a 2 cu ft insert would fit in there with a custom metal side panel to finish it off. The hearth may need an extension. How big an area would the stove be heating?

The room is about 400 sq ft. Don't need a lot of output, just enough to warm up that room. It's a cold daylight basement but the heat will travel up the stairs to the main floor which will be good. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thank you for the welcome! Especially the PNW insert. Pretty funny.

The fireplace is in a 25 x 10 to 15 feet wide. The couch in front of the fireplace is on the exterior wall and sits only about 6 ft from the fireplace. There's a cold bedroom down there on one end, stairs go up on the other with another cold room off the stairs. These rooms are cold only because they're mostly unused and we keep the heat vents closed. Good stove or insert would make downstairs much more enjoyable!

Jotul 350 is a nice looking flush mount insert with a smallish size requirement. I'm happy with mine. One thing now that I've been at it for a while, I would'nt mind a bigger stove. While there are many things to consider, one common theme you'll hear is to fit the biggest firebox you can in the space you have. Good luck, that's a cool space you have to work with.

www.jotul.com, see if the 450 would fit in there.

Somebody else posted one just exactly like this just the other day. You can probably find it with a search. I am not sure but I think another person with a similar one suggested an Avalon stove, they have stoves that convert to inserts or vice versa, so they look pretty good on the exposed sides and all. They are made by Travis, (as Lopi is) and are really excellent stoves. You would probably want the Pendleton or Ranier but there's a larger version too (Olympic) if you want to heat a larger area. I'll see if I can find that other thread...

pgmr on the forum has almost the exact same fireplace, he put in a Buck insert without the shroud, looked pretty good.

Thanks for the compliment, WG.

Buck has been working great and we still like not having the shrouds. They also make some non-cat models that can be used as an insert or hearth stove or whatever our install should be called. Trouble with a lot of inserts for this application is that the part behind the shroud is really ugly, so they aren't aesthetically pleasing w/o it.
