I'm installing my chimney system for my new Jotul F600 and I have the thimble through the wall. I knocked some plaster off the lathing while cutting the hole between the studs, so while I'm waiting for drywall compound to set I was wondering about insulation. I imagine it wouldn't be advisable to put backing free fiberglass insulation in the wall around the thimble? Is there any insulation that is supposed to go in the void around the thimble? I sort of hate to close up the wall with a giant void in there.

What is the chimney being used and is this the same brand thimble? The wall thimble assembly should maintain the proper 2" clearance from the chimney pipe snout coming into the house off the tee. You can insulate up to that thimble shield. If you want to be extra safe, use Roxul, mineral wool insulation or unfaced fiberglass.

I don't know what code says, but I use the fiberglass [I tear it off the paper backing]. I leave a few inches of space clear around the pipe. I have read that I don't need to, but I am willing to sacrifice a very small bit of heat loss there to keep the pipe clear, just makes me feel better. Likely not necessary.

The chimney is Ventis class A made by olympia mfg. in scranton PA. I'm told it's also sold under the Dura Vent name in their Champion line. It's the only system I could find that would give me 14" clearance from my outside wall so that I don't have to cut through my eave. All of the chimney parts are from this manufacturer and came together in a "system" built for my install. The interior of the thimble is indeed 2" away from the actual chimney pipe when I put the pipe through there. I guess that answers my question. Thanks.

Yes you can insulate up to the ventis wall pass thru. And do it is not also sold as Dura Vent. May i ask where you got it from?

Woodland direct website. I hate buying stuff online for exactly this reason. My local stove store gave me a song and dance about getting 20% off of the stove pipe through them if you first purchased the stove there, but even at 20% off, they were $300 more than woodland direct. Now I find that this is not actually Dura Vent. Hopefully still a quality product? I would rather deal locally, but I really lost faith in my local place after they couldn't explain the pricing between their stuff and everyone else's. They were selling Dura Vent, but not the Champion line. I didn't want 2" clearance up my outside wall then two 30 degree angles around the eave. I wanted a straight shot up from the 90.

Ok because no one is authorized by olympia to sell their products ventis in my opinion is better quality than duravent. Duravent uses 430 stainless on their interior which to me is pretty questionable. I will pass that info onto my sales rep at olympia thanks If i were you i would call olympia and explain where you got it and say you didn't know they were not authorized to sell their products and make sure the warantee is still valid.

Thanks very much for the help. I will certainly call Olympia and Woodland Direct too. Their website doesn't mention any brand of class A except Dura Vent. Good news about the product quality though. Thanks again.

That is because they are not allowed to sell it lol. Olympia is a very good company i doubt they will give you and problems but i would get a hold of them now instead of later. I doubt there will be a problem with the pipe but if there was you don't want to find out then that your warantee is no good.

And i am curious did you order it thinking it was going to be duravent? If so and they sent you a different pipe to me that is a problem even if it is still a good product

I did believe I was buying Dura Vent. I used Woodland's chimney builder app on their website and even spoke to a "trained sales rep" to go over the whole thing and ask a few questions before pulling the trigger. Come to think of it, I was told specifically that Dura Vent Champion was the only system that could give me the 14" outside wall clearance. Funny. I wonder if those calls are recorded...

Looking at Woodland's website they appear to list DuraVent and Champion as two separate product lines. They may have worked out a marketing arrangement with Olympia to sell the Ventis line under the Champion name. If so, that could be good for the DIY installer.

According to Olympia's sales manager they no one is authorized to sell their products especially under any other name.

I thought that Champion was a specific chimney system within the Dura Vent product line. That's what I based all my questions on when I called the sales rep at Woodland. My understanding was that the Champion system was the one system that would give me the 14" wall clearance I wanted on the outside wall. I believed that the the regular Dura Vent system had the 2" clearance with elbows to clear the eave. Whatever happened, I have $2600 worth of Ventis pipe sitting in my wood shop. The thimble is installed but I'll be sure to contact Olympia tomorrow before I do any more work.
