Im looking to purchase a wood insert for the upcoming season. Iv made my decision on the stove I want and the liner as well. Reading into it a bit it doesn't seem like anything to difficult to do on your but I do have 1 question. On my current fireplace I have a flu that is roughly 4"x14" with a main crank in the center of the flu. If im going to install a liner do I have to remove the flu and if so do I just grinder wheel the joints and hammer the bricks out with a hilty. Iv done masonry work just never on a chimney and don't feel like screwing this up. From what I can tell the flu looks set into the masonry bricks. And putting the liner through the flu I have to imagine wouldn't work since the rough opening looks far to small and the crank for it is directly in the center of the fireplace

what size will the flue liner be on this project? you currently have a 4" wide flue now and need to put at least a 6" in. Oblong maybe?

When you say flu, do you mean the damper? The damper is the metal plate that you open and close before lighting a fire in the fireplace. Maybe it's a regional thing.

First let's get the terminology straight. You aren't asking about the "flu" you are talking about the fireplace damper and damper frame.

Me and Boiler74 were typing at the same time.
