Question:
We are planning on installing a woodstove in our home. Our home is a 2-story with attic. The stove will be situated centrally on the main level in front of brick chimney. Our brick chimney is old and currently used for gas furnace & water heater- so we can't use brick chimney to vent stove, but instead we are planning on running stovepipe & chimney in front of old brick chimney. Our question is once we get to second level we will be using metal insulated chimney, what would be the best firesafe enclosure for metal chimney on second level? It will be located at end of hallway on second level. Also, is this a good set up for stove, stovepipe & chimney that is being in front of old brick chimney? sorry so wordy, but thanks for any replies..........
Answer:
The insulated metal chimney can simply be framed around and then sheetrocked. This sounds like a good way to go. Make certain you install all the right firestops and insulation shields. Of particular note is when the chimney goes through the first floor ceiling. On most chimney brands, this has to be left open or ventilated on the top of it after it passes through the ceiling. Make sure you don't drop in any debris later that can lodge against the pipe. Ask your installer or check the instructions about these and other details.
