Is everyone on the north east bracing for the big Nor’Easter Blizard Conditions Sunday Night? - See snow maps

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

We strive to provide opinions, articles, discussions and history related to Hearth Products and in a more general sense, energy issues.

We promote the EFFICIENT, RESPONSIBLE, CLEAN and SAFE use of all fuels, whether renewable or fossil.
Nothing yet in the Freeport area of Maine. We are only forecasted to get 4 to 7 inches from this storm. So not a big deal.

This is more of a southern storm, so Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the like will likely get a lot.

So far 100k customers in MA with no power.
The policy is if the wind is over 30-40 MPH then the utility crew is not allowed to climb and fix the poles because it is too dangerous so they said customers maybe without power for 5 days! See current outages map

recent update in MA 235,000 homes without power. Approaching 175k outage on the cape alone. The wind is howling here. Good storm, if you're prepared. Wind gusts are all over the map, but I doubt there are many crews out making repairs. The wind is supposed to be more reasonable this evening,

You’re lucky, our post office (it is a small one) only has one driver to deliver mail. In general we only get mail four out of the six days the post office delivers mail.

What is surprising is snow storms usually don’t affect delivery.

That’s when winter storms get scary/dangerous. People trying to stay warm using whatever appliances they have on hand.
If it wasn’t so expensive to bury power lines a lot of grief could be avoided.

Good luck to all those affected.

I'm Metrowest Boston. Forecast is 12 -18". Looks to be on course for that based on seeing what the neighbor across the street blew off hsi driveway.

National Weather Service has posted totals over 30" in some locations in RI already.

My snowblower engine is dying. Excessive blowby under load. Need to keep an eye on oil level, and hope I can get through the rest of this year.

The family owns a house on the Cape. Power has been out there since 7:15. If the power isn't back on by tomorrow I'm going to have to load up the generator and get the furnace running there so the pipes don't freeze. The house holds warmth pretty well so I've got some time, but I don't want to push my luck either.

I shoveled from 9 am to 1 pm. I'm about 75% done
No way that say how much we got, as the winds were so high that I see one place around a tree where everything blew away and see a few grass leaves, but the majority of the yard, and driveway, is 2.5 ft or so
Many places it got to my family jewels.

One square yard in the driveway had 13". The road easily is 26",.where no drifts are.

I had never heard of Market Basket but checked it out. Reminds me of our Sobeys.
Looks like I'll be getting about an inch an hour but with the winds I'm not sure where it will pile up.
I brought 2 bags of pellets into the porch plus a shovel. Tomorrow I can bottle beer.

I spent 3 hours today on unplowed roads going through 8” of snow. 4wd is nice sometimes.

This guy maybe should have a better spot for his generator

That is what I thought about. I have a decent place for it but it's not covered. In summer (tropical storm) that's fine.
In snow that's a problem.

Don't want to make a lean to that I then have to store someplace...

I've got an issue too. I have a garage close to the house, and one of the last owners had put in an emergency 30A panel, and the receptacle is very close to the corner of the garage. Then at the corner of the garage they have a pipe going through. I assume it is for the cord, but then if the generator is in the garage, the venting is questionable. I'd like a generator enclosure, but you need to extend the exhaust. I have two generators too, a 120V one, and 240V.

My Geni outlet is outside next to the garage door so since it is a temporary use, Lowe’s does have a nice cover made for a Generator so I can just run it in my driveway
:)

This is FB, but basically this guy in NFLD had to climb out a window to start shovelling.

Where I was today the snow was up to the bottom of the windows… like 30” deep maybe? It was to my knees out where the wind was blowing.

Like this?
The window sil there is 8 ft (!!) off the ground.
Drift of course, courtesy of the howling winds last night.

I wish I’d taken a pic. I set some traps there, maybe I’ll be back later today to pick up an opossum, lol. Think of a wing on a school. Front and back sides of the wing would be able to roll out the windows if need be. Under some of those windows I have bait stations. I didn’t even bother looking for them.
