[Hearth.com] Is this hickory?
 
Doesn't look like it, have a picture of the bark? Trim a small piece and burn it, if you crave barbecue when you smell the smoke it's hickory.
 
Diamond bark = Ash

Whittle on a piece. If you get a Louisville Slugger, its Ash.
 
I remember playing Little League baseball in Atlanta, years ago. On every baseball bat, it was burned into the wood, MADE WITH NORTHERN WHITE ASH.

What are they making bats from today?

We are loaded with ash here. Won’t always be. I cut about 6 down on my property this winter that had been showing signs of dying, and dropping limbs on the roof. But man, there seems to be a lot around.
