As photo attached, why did so much of the black paint come off during my very first winter season using this stove, and why is there something that looks like rust? Do I need to do anything to treat it? What caused this to happen? The highest stove top temperature I usually reach is only about 550°F. Thank you all for your advice!

That's not supposed to happen, and I agree with daksy.
But I would first see if you can make a warranty claim. I mean, poor manufacturing instance.
Unless you're hesitant to swap out a stove. (Though wirebrushing, degreasing (!), and repainting is not nice inside your living room either...)

Wow, Not cool. I definitely do not want to have to do a full scrape, prep and repaint in my living room. And if i did i would want a check for over $500. More of that paint will fail so you probably have to strip off all the paint on the front to do a proper job.
Ah my price just went up to $750.
