Maybe you can help us with our conundrum.

We are building a new house and we're planning on having a double-sided wood fireplace between the kitchen and dining room. Apparently, there is only one EPA certified, double sided, wood burning fireplace on the market: the Supreme Duet.

It is a little small, expensive and not really the look we we're going for. We were hoping to do a very old fashioned European look like this.

Can anyone give some advice? I'm afraid the only way to get the look we want is to do gas, but I'd hate to do that because it would put off less heat and we would not be able to cook on it.

Big double-sided fireplaces rarely heat well and can pull a lot of heat out of the room. If great cooking and heating are the goals consider a nice wood cook stove for the kitchen. It's not the same look, but a heckuva lot more practical if you love cooking. And better yet, install an EPA ZC fireplace where people will hang out the most which usually is the family or living room.
