Kitchen Queen 380 Floor Protector and Heat Shield Questions

Greetings all. I have a couple of questions about floor protection and the use of the KQ rear heat shield for reducing clearances.

1) Floor protection: When planning out the floor protection for our KQ 380 in advance of shipment, I utilized the manual online that was available from both Obadiah's and Antique Stoves (in MI), which stated that you need a non-combustible surface and R=2 for floor thermal protection.

After receiving our KQ 380, I pulled out the manual that came with the stove and read this:

The stove must be set on a non-combustible material.
Only Type 1 (ember) floor protector standard UL1618 for USA or approved to the local codes R-Value = 0.
Your stove must be installed on a non-combustible material plate to protect the floor and avoid fire that could be caused by: Projection of sparks when door opening or loading logs.
The floor protector must not be cut or trimmed.
It must extend 16 inches beyond the front and 8 inches (200mm) beyond each side of the fuel loading and ash removing opening(s), and under the chimney connector and 2 incles (50 mm) beyond each side.

So, this means no MiCore, etc. up to R=2...just ember protection now? (if so...yippee!) I'm guessing they added a bottom heat shield?

2) Rear heat shield: The new manual states that with a heat shield, you can be 2 inches away from the sides, rear, and corner with unprotected surfaces. However, the chimney connector says that you have to have 18 inches to an unprojected surface and 6 inches to a protected surface (NFPA-211). So, does that mean that a heat shield is a waste of time essentially (who cares if you can be 2 inches away from an unprotected wall with the heat shield on the stove if you have to be 18 inches away from the unprotected wall for the chimney connector)?

You can go by the manual. Sounds like the stove only needs ember protection for the floor.

The stovepipe conundrum is common. Stove pipe clearance has priority. Double-wall or shielded single-wall has a 6" clearance.

We chatted yesterday with the manufacturer (caught them on the phone!) and they said the heat shield covers the chimney connector, so clearances can be as close as 2 inches with the rear heat shield on. Same with the side heat shield. And yes...they said they recently revised their manual due to changes in the stove...so just ember protection! Whoohoo.

How far is the chimney connector from the wall. Even if the connector is shielded the stove pipe clearances need to be honored where it is out in the raw. If there is 6" then it is ok for double wall stove pipe.

In a corner install, the 2" back/corner clearance could allow a closer placement that would also work with the 6" pipe clearance.

Another scenario is the stove installed backside to a short stub wall. But it sounds like in your situation the 6" pipe clearance will be the limiting factor.

A non-combustible wall (studs and all) behind the stove is another possible solution if the stovepipe is closer than 6".

How are you going to clean under and around the oven with the rear clean out, if closer than 6 inches?
Until you learn how to use it, you may be cleaning more than twice a year.
