I'm in the process of replacing the tile and hearth for a new Jotul F45 that will be installed in the daylight basement. The area will be a mother in law suite and the chosen tile (not yet ordered) includes a light color brick style tile on the wall, with a darker brown tile under the stove and in front of the hearth onto the floor (just enough to meet the clearance requirements).

Although I'm sure it will look nice since it goes with the color theme of the area, I wanted to reach out and see if anyone has tried this and if they have regrets in trying to keep it clean. The stove will be a primary source of heat rather than a decorative piece so it'll be exposed to all of the normal sources of wood stove dirt and debris.

The tile behind the stove should not get dirty and should be easy to clean with an occasional wipe. The dirtiest area will be in front of the stove, especially right below the ashlip.

On that note - the short vertical area from the bottom of the stove to the floor was requested to be the light tile to match the back wall. Since as you mentioned it near the dirtiest area would you recommend going with the darker tile across that area as well?

There should be at least 16" of hearth in front of the stove door so this area should be ok.
What will be covering the cold concrete slab floor?

The concrete floor will be covered by laminate flooring with a built in padding on the back.
