Love my Hearthstone Lincoln 6080! However, the rod is stuck and I can't pull it out. This is a known design flaw (if I had known I would got the jotul). Can I use the stove if I can't pull out the rod (which is attached to the sled)??? The tech won't be able to come out for a while and who knows how long it will take to get parts. It is getting very cold out and I use the stove a lot for heat.

Just to verify, you're talking about the knob/ rod that opens and closes the bypass? If it is stuck in, I believe that means that the bypass is closed and if you make a fire all of the exhaust will run through the Cat from the moment it lights off. Is that correct?

If so, it wouldn't be safe to run. It might actually harm the Cat.

Is there someone else nearby that might be mechanically inclined that could take a look at it and maybe get it open? If it's open, you could run it that way, but it won'y be very efficient.

Check your manual to be sure that this doesn't violate your warranty.

This is a new stove and the problem should be a warranty issue. However, you may be able to figure out what is happening. Remove the square cookplate and see if there is an obvious problem. Maybe the cat has swollen and is binding? Take pictures along the way. They may be needed to prove a warranty issue.

Maybe it’s a lube issue.
IIRC they are using a traylike config to slide the cat in place under the flue exit. This area gets really hot. I'm not sure any lube would work long term there. It shouldn't be needed.

Thanks everyone! It is a gasket issue, and I am not the only one who has it. That rope gasket that is inside once you open the plate, it shredded. Not a good design in my view, and I will see how the tech installs a new one (as I can't afford service calls this expensive), so I can do it myself after this. They said I could use the stove for a bit until they can see me, which may be 2 weeks. Others have talked about this design flaw, no sure if it happens if you can't get enough draw (which is my issue I think-I have tried everything)

Oh and yes, the rod was stuck due to the gasket ripping and getting stuck in the area near the pipe

Thanks for the update. I've had some concerns about this design.

My Craftsbury's bypass gasket fell off within days of installation. Totally different stove design but interesting that they are consistent in gasket issues across their product line.

It's not uncommon to share a core internal design across models. The GM40 is also likely similar.
