Log 5 ID, Maple?

I think that is Ash. Norway Maple is pretty similar, but Norway Maple is usually only found along woodland edges, parks, forests near town, etc. and so I wouldn't expect it in a load of logs from a logger. I am not sure how to tell from these pictures whether it is Norway Maple or Ash, but I'll bet Ash.
i dont beleive its ash....not exactly sure what it is..but i would guess maple....look at his next log id...its ash..

Cool, I thought it was maple based on the rounds I split last year around this time but had no idea what type. Will this season in a year?
yes it should, heres some of mine at 18 months. I bent the tip of one of the pins, Norway is definitely hard maple.

I think I need to change this one from hard maple to soft.
After getting some experience seeing the difference from hard maple and soft while splitting, this log opens up like butter, like the softer maples you folks identified. I do not see any of the characterisitcs in the bark of soft maple though. What do you think? Is Norway a hard or soft maple?

Norway is Norway. All 3 Maples are hardwoods, Hard Maple(AKA Sugar or Rock Maple) is the densest of the three. Norway would fall somewhere in between Hard and Soft(AKA Red, Silver, etc...) would be the least dense of the three. If it where me I would consider it a "Soft" Maple.
Okay, thanks nford, in the soft pile it goes. I am still beefing up the stuff to burn next fall.
