Log 7 Id, Looks like another hickory to me. Shagbark?

My Shagbarks are shaggier. It's gotta be some type of Hickory, though...What does it smell like when split?

I think you're getting the hang of wood ID. I'd say that is a Shagbark Hickory that isn't large enough to get really shaggy and I think some of the loose bark has been knocked off in the process of getting it from the forest to you.

I have lots of shagbark that size,quite a few much larger,lots that are smaller. Mostly 2nd or 3rd growth from century farm - part of 4 original 10 acre woodlots used for heat starting in late 19th century.Some of the trees growing really slow - 12-14" diameter have bark as shaggy as more open grown ones twice that size & same age.

Save some of that for the BBQ pit and/or grill!

Its a Shagbark that grew a little faster than most. Look at the growth rings,they are a little wider than usual.Shagbark will get more 'shaggy' with slower growth and/or size. With that the bark will start to be be curled up in plates & loose at each end also. I normally wear safety glasses only when bucking other woods,but this stuff its helmet with mesh faceshield also.Those loose bits can fly off with great velocity when the chain hits them,had a few scratches on arms also,can be painful.

Most of your bark on a shaggy will fall off tossing it around!....Thats a tossed around shaggy not the saw on top!

That's true. I gather most of the bigger pieces up,use them for kindling or the smoker (in small amounts).Newly dead Shagbark cut 2 weeks ago.

Sure wish we had lots of that. We do have a few shagbark hickory but they are really young. We try to protect them too.

Shagbark for Sure, Young Shag Bark can have baby smooth bark.

You know, this smelling stuff to me draws a blank. I know a few smells like red and white oak (hardwood floor installs), but nothing else really. I wish I could be more help in this area. Unless it's obvious to me, I'm useless here.
