Looking for a debarker

Hello all,
I'm looking for a hand tool to tear off the bark of cut rounds. Typically I can use 10" rounds in my furnace but I think they dry better if the bark is removed. I've seen a few on the market but I have no idea which ones work well. I saw a flat one that looks like a very small shovel thats flat on the end (around 5" wide), and another which has two handles for pulling toward yourself.

Any tips welcomed.

I my honest opinion, anything greater than 8 inch round should be whacked in two. It's much less time consuming than de-barking and will dry MUCH faster.

In my experience, 12 inch rounds split in two dry a full season faster than 8 inch un-split rounds.

Absolutely I agree with you. But I still want to put in larger rounds, since it prolongs the burn time in the furnace.

My tip is: don't bother. It's too much work.

Used to be you could buy a small debarking head that fit on a chainsaw. People used to use them on cabin logs.

The shovel-shaped thing is called a spud.

The other thing you are talking about is called a draw shave. Now THAT'S A LOT OF WORK.

If you want bark-free wood, let it dry for a year and the bark will pop right off most species.

I have been thinking I need one to clean up some logs for the sawmill. That dirt and gravel does a number on the band.

I see from those two links that one of those spuds is 2' long and the other is nearly 5' long! Which one is best I don't know.

Agree with Eric.

Also agree with the boys on taking longer to dry...but they do extend the burn time....We have the 8 inch rounds and they are 2 yrs old...next yr will be 3...

Lot of work...if your game let the bark fly!

I'd suspect the 5' one is used if someone were standing on top of a log. You could also use an adz. The log wizard is the way to go. My 2 cents.
