loose embers

I removed the glass on my Jotul GI 635 to clean it for the first time. In the process of vacuuming the interior I noticed that some soft spongy loose embers had been spread on top of the solid embers at the base of the firebox. I'm assuming they were added to enhance the look of the glowing ember feature.
Can anyone enlighten me on this?

They will be mentioned in your manual if they are supposed to be there, & where & why they are used.

There is no mention of the additional embers anywhere in the manual. Nothing in the installation section or in the replacement parts sections.
