Lots of free wood

Funny thing just happened the other day, the boss calls me and says "you still lookin for wood?". I say of course i'm lookin for wood, i'm always lookin for wood. It just so happens he know this retired fella who is clearing his lot, so I meet this guy and he wants to know what size of logs my stove will take so I tell him 18" logs. Now get this he is going to fall the trees, cut them up in 18" logs and stack them so they are eay to get to. All I have to do is come get it. Looks to my untrained eye that there is roughly 4-6 cords of this stuff. The only problem if you could really call it a problem is it is Aspen or Poplar. But, I fugure free wood is free wood. If it doesn't have as many BTU's burn more of it. Thought I would share my good fortune.

Yep, can't go wrong with free firewood! Not much hardwood up there so burn what you can get!

Hey FN, you may set the new forum record for coldest winter. What are you burning this wood in?

It's been snowing for the last couple of days, got around 3 or 4 inches now so we won't see the grass till march . It been about 25 during the day and around 10-15 at night. This is my sencond year burning a Vermont Castings Encore (Cat), no complaints so far. Stove burns well however I wish I could get longer burn times, I have 18' straight run of 8" pipe and it drafts like crazy, combined with the fact that we have no real hard woods I only get around 6 hours of burn.

The only wood we have is Birch, Sprice and Aspen. I try to burn as much Birch as possible but I so burn a fair amout of Spruce. Never had much problem with cresote, have to let the Spruce dry good and burn it hot.

Yeah, softwoods don't make for the longest burn times. I could never handle living in Fairbanks, too cold for me, but I sure would like to visit when the aurora is cranking.

I drove from Anchorage up to Fairbanks a few years ago... wasn't winter though... but it was daylight at like 1 in the morning...completely freaked me out seeing as I flew from Frankfort to Seattle, Seattle to Anchorage, and then grabbed a car and started driving north. Body didn't know what the hell time it was, at all.

Normally the colder it gets the better the northern lights come out, also it helps to be somewhere where it is completely dark........no lights from town to dim the natural lights. Jan or Feb is the best.
