As my insert has double wall on top, to allow fan venting of heat, should a magnetic stove top thermometer be placed on front of stove where it’s single ply instead of double with an air gap like the top? I’ve got it place on the single ply steel currently as I believe it more accurately reflects the stove temp. Just wanted to be sure I was correct in my assumption .

Thanks

It is much more useful to get a flue probe (from e.g. Condar). Stove top temps are not a good indicator of how your fire is doing.
