Major Score - WITH PICS

Get home and a truck/trailer was behind my house rolling 3'+ diameter logs down the steep ravine behind my house. Naturally, I interveined. They are clearing my neighbors area around the pond and had cut down at least 3 massive Red Oak trees and rolled them down the ravine (which is my neighbor's property). I immediately talked to my neighbor - who also burns wood - albeit in a fireplace - and told her if she will have them stack up some large rounds, I will rent a splitter and get both of us enough wood. She thought that was a great idea but was concerned about storage areas. I immediately told her that I could split as much as they leave and stack it down by the pond to be seasoning for the next couple of years - which she thought was a great idea!

They are going to finish up tonight and we'll see just how much wood they leave. They said they had more down there then I could want - I think they underestimate my wants.

Tomorrow they'll be taking down a pine on my property that has been plaguing my cars with sap for years. Too close to the power lines for my taste. Yes, I'm keeping that wood too.

+1. My neighbor doesn't heat with wood, but I take everything he cuts down. I've been trying to talk to him, but, ya know ... he ain't listening %-P

Any way to get the stuff in the ravine? Yesterday we split some scrounged Red Pine down to starter/kindling size, leaving the knotty stuff in larger splits for outside fires. I've also got a dead one in the yard that I'll get at some point.

Well, no pics today - they didn't show up until after 1pm and by 5pm (when I was leaving they house) they still weren't finished. Hope to see something tomorrow.

No possible way to get them out of the ravine - outside of a big truck and HUGE winch. Both, I don't have. Hoping to get a few cords out of this at least. Hopefully they'll have 5 or 6+ cords over there; maybe I'm too optimistic.

Although it is still a lot of wood, they ended up throwing away more wood than they saved me. I'm a bit disappointed, but I guess beggars can't be choosers. Had I been able to sit around all day and mark the wood I wanted, I'd have been able to get as much as I wanted, BUT...they were working for a paycheck and their task was to clean up the area. Suppose they didn't want to leave a bunch of wood laying around.

Here are the two piles they've left me. The one with the large rounds is quite a bit. Each round is at least 3' in diameter. They are very large.

The other pile looks like a honey pot too. I took two angles of each pile to give context for length/width.

Those are some NICE red oak rounds. It's sad to hear they just rolled it down into a ravine. Dad and I stacked out a nice face cord of the red oak I split yesterday. Breaks my heart to think of shoving it off in some ravine to just rot.

Just talked to the tree guys - they said they left me two more trees on the other side of the pond that I didn't see. YES! I also had them drop a 50' pine in my front yard. Of course, they told me not to burn that inside, it'll create creosote.

I'll get some pics of the new trees up soon - I'm getting more and more happy. They said the trees on the other side of the pond were Hickory - does that burn well?

Can anyone identify the wood in this picture? There seems to be at least two kinds, and I'm not very smart about identifying - unless someone told me it was cypress, cedar, or pine, I'd believe whatever they gave me.

Can anyone identify the wood in this picture? There seems to be at least two kinds, and I'm not very smart about identifying - unless someone told me it was cypress, cedar, or pine, I'd believe whatever they gave me.

Well, bummer. It seems as if the tree laying at the bottom of the pile facing me is all punky throughout. I can't believe a tree service would have left me that - they should know better. The rest of it, however, has been red oak and there is no punky areas, even around the edge of the bark. SCORE!

I worked out there yesterday and only made a dent with the rented splitter. The large rounds were too hard to move with just two of us, and we had to use the truck and a tow strap. I think I'm in over my head.

Ah...... I've had those same thoughts some times. Then I bought this: 1,000 lb. hand truck and a Wern winch. I don't leave home to haul wood without either of them.

Take your maul and split em into halves or even quarters. I did a few weeks ago to lift some into the truck, took maybe 8 whacks in under 10 seconds. You can do it!

The largest rounds on top look like Red Oak. The bottom tree appears to be White Ash, although a couple of other trees have similar bark - maybe Tulip Tree?

It's my neighbors property and I'm trying to be somewhat reactive to remove them - so this will happen in the future.

I guess I'll have to split them where they sit and see if I can bring them out. I've never split a round THAT large. Man, they are big!
