Hi all,

I know I should get up on the roof to measure the chimney properly but I was wondering if there is a building standard for the distance between the ceiling and the floor in residential homes. I cannot find a definitive answer online.

Thanks,

Sean

It varies, sometimes a lot. The standard is 8', but our house is 9'6", then you need to say a foot for the joist + floor each floor and the travel through the attic.

Ah, I wasn't accurate enough with my terminology. I guess what I meant to ask was what is the height between the first level ceiling and second level floor?

Sounds like its around 12" though. That's roughly what I was able to surmise searching the web. Thanks begreen.

I took a string, weighted it with a large metal washer and let it go down the chimney. Had a friend let me know when it appeared in the fireplace. Marked the string on the roof and measured the string. Worked for me...

The thickness of the joist area between the ceiling below and the floor above. Generally around 12 inches with subfloor and sheetrock. Assuming 8 inch or 10 inch joist. Could be a little larger if using larger joist. 12 - 15 inches would be a safe guess.
