Morning Haul plus homemade rack

Attached is a picture of the wood I scrounged this morning. I might go old school and split all this by hand. Also attached is a picture of the pallet firewood rack I built Thursday. I figured it would hold a little over 1/2 cord. Stackable area is 4x6.6x3. I have found a almost unlimited supply of pallets, so I am thinking of building a small wood shed from pallets. I might cut a standing dead at the church this afternoon.

Good score, I built a few racks just like that only I made enough to for 10 cords, good way to keep the wood stacked and neat.

Old-scool is cool...just be careful!
I've been putting bricks under each end of the 2x4s to keep the pallets from contact with the ground. Remains to be seen weather the bricks will sink in too much from the weight. Maybe I will have to dedicate six bricks to each pallet instead of bridging two pallet ends on three bricks. The soil isn't hard-packed in the woods and that's a lot of weight. It appears your pallets are off the ground, but I can't quite see how they are supported...but I see the concrete block lying on top.

I have found a almost unlimited supply of pallets, so I am thinking of building a small wood shed from pallets.

If you have a good supply of identical pallets, I'd go for it!

Overkill- I think this smaller sticks are hickory. The big rounds are oak. Go from two different locations.
Stover- I have just regular bricks underneath the pallets. I have plenty of bricks left over from a home addition last year. So I will probably put several on each corner and in the middle before I start loading it.

I did cut down the standing dead. It was red oak. It was a hairy situation. It was bad punky, so I had concerns about the holding wood during the back cut. But it came down fine with the help of a few wedges. I cut it to length and shaved off all he punk down to the good wood. The good wood in the middle is hard as a rock. Probably will not get to splitting this afternoon, as I am exhausted. Will post pics later if I get a chance.

That punk on the wood is just the junk sapwood. That always happens to oak if the bark doesn't let go, it punks the sapwood out really fast. Still lots of good BTU's there, mudbug!

Backwoods- it had at least half an inch of punky junk completely around it. Just ran the edge of my hatchet down the sides to shave it all off. It came off pretty easy. It did still have the bark on it, most of that popped off when the tree hit the ground.

We've never bothered taking it off. Let the fire do it for you! Even though that outside layer is punk, it won't go much further if at all.
