Hello, new member here. I am wanting to lay bluestone in a mosiac pattern over existing brick hearth (extension) of a regular wood burning fireplace. My question is what is the best mortar to do this with and what to use to fill in the joints after. Thanks in advance and I have searched everywhere and cannot seem to find an answer to this.

not going to be a high impact area.... I'd say you're fine with type s

I would use latex admix premium stone setting mortar. HD sells it for about $25 per bag. It is the premium mortar that they sell.

It might be overkill but I've never had it fail. That is what I used to set my soapstone hearthstone and about 600 square feet of limestone.

Use latex enhanced mortar (your color choice) for the grout.

Let it dry well (2 weeks) before you burn and heat it up.

Yeah. I went with type s. Seemed to do the job but we'll see. I do not think I will have to use it any time soon as it is 70 in SC now!
