moving and bringing firewood

We are likely going to move soon. I have around 6 cord of mostly red oak that I would like to take with me. The move would be about 11.5 miles. I just priced out renting a 17' U-Haul truck for under $200 (cost of the truck plus all the mileage). The wood is pretty green; it was split this past spring. I figure I can fit a cord in there with the weight restrictions, so that would be 6 trips. Long day!!

Anyone else done this?

Other suggestions?

I understand the attachment to the existing wood given you worked it with your own hands. But I would sell the existing wood and buy replacement wood.

Or, in lieu of buying replacement, just renew your efforts at processing some new wood. I would be selective in what you process and focus on finding some standing dead that might be sufficient for this year. I dropped a neighbor's standing dead oak and it was dry as a bone.

Aside from the issues of transporting that much weight, and doing it safely, loading and unloading six cords of wet oak by hand Is a very big job in my opinion. Doing it in one day?!? Yikes! I hope you've got help. Maybe hire someone to do it?

I know this may sound crazy......................Sell all of the Oak, use the money to buy something that you can use right away...Ash, Silver Maple, Birch....I would ask $1250 or best offer for all of it.. Remember if it takes 6 trips....you are handling each cord twice.

Iam Suprised the buyer didnt try to negotiate the wood in as part of the sale. Just like furniture and appliances etc.

If you can pull right up to your current and future stack locations & grab a couple helpers it wouldn't be too bad at all.

6 cord (if we're talking about actual, true cords, not some made up estimation of wood volume) is a lot of wood. I doubt you will have the time and ambition required to move it all in one day - especially if you are making 6 trips. How do you heat with firewood but don't own a pickup?

If you are not selling the wood with your house. Then sell it on Craig's list. Take a cord with you. Sell the rest. You have plenty of other thing to organize and move than firewood.

I know people who have a pick up, and don't heat with firewood. What's your point here (says she with the F250 ) ?

I probably could have fit 5 cords but I only had 4 to move, took maybe 4 hours, we picked it up 20 miles from my house and dumped it near my firewood racks then cleaned and returned the truck, we could have done 6 in a day easily, we could have done 4 more if I had too. We didn't stack it, I did that when I had some free time during the week. I didn't stack it in the truck either, just tossed it in. I guess it depends on how good of shape your in, age etc..

I just bought 4 cords from a similar distance away. Including the time to pick up a friend, load it stacked in the truck, and unload in a pile, it took ~1.5 hours per load, and we weren't working fast at all. If I didn't have to be on baby duty, we could have done all of it in one day.

How many loads? Four? One cord per load, or were you doing more than that?

The driving time back and forth is the bottleneck for me. ~6 hours of just driving back and forth doing a cord per load. 20-25 minutes one way. If I can cut down the driving back and forth, it would significantly shorten the day. Just need to find a truck that can support at least 15,000 pounds. Then we could put 3 cord in each load, and do it in two trips.

A dumpster is an interesting idea, but not practical for my location. To be closest to the stacks it has to be on the street (and I don't want to have a dumpster blocking the driveway), so a truck is really the only option.

yea, one cord per trip. They didn't have room to fit the horse trailer, otherwise it would have been 2 trips. My distance was all highway as well, cutting the drive time down dramatically.
