Mystery Splitter: $435

I just bought this from a guy around the corner. He didn�t know what make it is but I put the knarliest peice of crotch wood I had through it - no problem. He thinks its a 22 ton. I was happy to see the Honda 8 horse power engine and just bought it.

Any ideas as to the make and capacity?

25 Ton: $2700

Seems like a good deal. I'm gonna replace the fuel, air and oil filter then some hoses, grease it up and let'r rip. An arborist just dumped 4000 pounds of black walnut on my land:

I'm not sure if that Big Marble place is charging full retail or what, but that Speeco splitter for $2700 seems overpriced. The 25-ton TSC, MTD, Troy Bilt, etc. are all $1500 and the Ariens 35-Ton is only $2K.

In any case, it looks like $435 is a sweet deal for what you got--especially if it splits all you get! Good luck.

The guy I bought it from said that he bought it from a fire wood producer for $800 seven years ago and had stopped using it because of his back. Now he just wanted it out of his garage so he'd have space for other "junk".

Yea, that wood was almost too beautiful to burn. Every time I started "slicing and dicing" I felt sick. So I call a bunch of wood turning friends of mine (guys with laths who make bowls and such). They'd show up, grin and say: "how much can I take?". After loading up their trucks and giving me a bottle or two of wine, they where off with a promise to show me what they had made with what they took. All in all, they may have taken about 1000 lb, which would have heated my house for two weeks. But the art they will create will last a life time. Easy come easy go. Better them than me.

A lot of the parts on that splitter look like the Speeco/Tractor Supply Splitters. It's a pretty safe bet that it's made by Speeco, which is a good thing.

Well, I've got a burr up my butt about what I've bought. Is it a 22/25 or 27 ton splitter? So I took a look at cylinder size, and hydraulic pump to try to figure it out.

Cylinder ID = 4.5 inches
2 stage 16 GPM hydraulic pump (Haldex modle 1002211) max pressure could either be 3000 psi or 3500 psi depending on your source of information.

It looks like Haldex no longer makes this pump (date code 090502 - 9/5/02) so I will have to call them to figure that one out.
But by the equations at this site:

it could either be a 23.85 ton splitter (pump = 3000 psi) or a 27.83 ton splitter (pump = 3500 psi). Either way, it crunched through every notched and nasty peice of crotch buck I had on the property. I noticed the 6x6 I beam bending under the stress as was the cylinder wedge push rod.

In the process of doing this, the JB weld job which the previouse owner had done on the valve handle flange (pot aluminium) gave out. So in about 1.5 hours I had put on a replacement solution which I think will never fail. Ugly but it works and will not fail (see last of pictures).

The hydraulic pump model number 1002211 is difficult to find the specs on because it is specifically built for Speeco by Haldex. I called them today and was told this by Kevin in tech support ( 1-800-525-8322 )

So the splitter is a Speeco.

The psi rating of the pump is from 3200 to 3400 psi. Its max operating pressure is 3800 psi but Speeco discourages setting the pressure relief valve to this setting because it wears out the pump faster. With an 8 horse power Honda engine (240cc) and a 4 inch cylinder this is a 22 ton machine with the capability of delivering up to 25 ton for short periods of time.

Mystery solved

BTW, the handle mounting braket which broke on my splitter can be replaced for $7.00 (shipping not included) from Tracter Supply part number 182-0453.
