The hearthstones of today are new designs with very little earned reputation. They do look great and the specs sound good but can they deliver?

The BK design is proven to deliver on marketing specs and time tested reliable. You must be able to provide an adequate chimney system for the ashford. Especially for the ashford.
What does an adequate chimney system mean?

A minimum of 15 ft (taller if you have elbows, horizontal runs, and/or live farther above sea level, see the manual) of double wall stove pipe (inside) + class A (or insulated in masonry) outside.
So the total should be at least 15 ft.

The manual you can download from the BK site explains it well

Perfect. Thank you.

Perfect. Thank you.

I saw the bends in your old stove pipe, small house so probably one story, and your chimney pokes through the low side of the ceiling. 15’ all vertical can be tough but is required for the ashford.

If you really are concerned about a SHTF scenario, get yourself a good, modern, EPA stove, a stock of spares for the consumable items, and an old Fisher or All Nighter to store in a shed or basement. The more modern stove will run better, cleaner, with less fuel. The old one will outlast you and your kids when you run out of spares for the EPA stove and it will be less fussy about what you throw in it. That is good, because you will have a tough time keeping up with it's wood consumption. By the time your EPA stove is dead, your chainsaw will be, too.

Good point about the chainsaw, but there are 2 person handsaws too. This scenario calls for an EPA stove with a minimum need for consumables, i.e.: maybe only door gaskets.

From those pictures I see no reason why the Progress side loader would not work.

Is it sold in Canada? The PH for a small 1000 sq ft cottage is overkill methinks.

- 31F is pretty cold. But he originally was the one who mentioned the Progress then discounted it because it's a side loader. If it were me waiting for the world to end, I'd want to have that by my side as the next ice age might be coming.

If one is worried about the end of the world a cat stove would be my last choice.

If I was, location might be more important than the stove. There are places where that is not a necessity and it's a good idea not to be downwind of the fan.

All great discussion here guys, I would love to get a Woodstock, but I don't know if I'm able to up here in Canada. If someone wants to work out a deal and deliver it to me from the states, I'll pay you personally in the CryptoCurrency of your choice. Does Woodstock have a huge backlog right now?

It's actually the high side of the house. The other half of my house is behind the wall on the stove side. The stove is located just right of the center of the house. The wall to the left is the center wall that basically divides our house in 2.

Too bad you don't like the "ugly" one, you are missing out.
I'd love to get it but I'm afraid that would be quite difficult here in Ontario. But please, that would be our first choice. Woodstock is the company we'd love to go with if we could. We're just low on time. But not on resources. I'd love to work out a deal if someone could help us acquire one!!

Why would an out of country stove with a cat be the first choice for a survival scenario? Is the SHTF qualifier just to attract attention?

No? The post is looking for a very high quality stove that will last atleast 3 decades.
If woodstock makes quality stoves and I can stock up on a few parts over the next few years, why wouldn't it be on the list?

Not sold in the country is a major factor. 30 yrs is an exceptionally long time period for a stove with a bypass system and a cat. A basic welded steel stove fits that scenario better.

End of the world scenario - prob get either a used Fisher or J.A. Roby

When I began my search I had no knowledge of stoves at all and I just assumed old stoves have just exponentially improved. After the last few weeks I now know that the cost of technology and progress is a lower quality and longetivity.

I assumed I'd be able to get something as badass as the old smoke dragons in terms of longetivity and as efficient as the new blaze kings in terms of tech. Obviously that not really how it works but I wish it was.

How much is a Blaze King Catalyst now a days? Expect to pay that every other year. I’d be looking at steel non cats with a 2 cu ft fire box.

This has not been my experience. Nor has it been the experience of the other two BK's I helped install at the same time as mine. I went 4 years before replacing the Cat. My original was still functioning but seemed lazy. It is still here in my possession as a usable item if needed. The other 2 BK's are on the original Cats. All 3 of these are 24/7 heaters that are used from Oct. through April. These stoves are still burning smoke free and have chimney deposits that haven't dramatically changed.

It all depends on the hours put on the cat. It seems logical to expect long hours in a SHTF scenario in Canada, so a cat replacement every 2-3 yrs under this circumstance is not unexpected. It is unnecessary with a non-cat. A good one should go with no more than a door gasket replacement in 5-7 yrs.
