Need floor protection for a Kalamazoo Wood Stove - currently we have a hardwood floor that is not flat or smooth but warn. To cover the foot print of the Kalamazoo stove we need a 5ftx7ft floor protector. We have ruled out puting tile in because the floor is uneven and it is in a cabin. Do we have to install floor protection since the fire box is so high in the wood stove. All we can find at our local hearth store is a UL listed 4ft x 4ft sheet metal floor protector. Can we use it and put in under the fire box or will the insurance man go crazy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.....................JWSTW

Kalamazoo? Havent they been closed down since the 50s?

You are going to have to go by the NFPA (National Fire Protection Agencies) regs on installing an unlisted solid fuel device. You are going to need a lot more than a piece of sheet metal or tile.

Look here at NFPA 211 (broken link removed to http://www.nfpa.org/freecodes/free_access_document.asp?id=21106)

Good luck, and safe burning.

I am guessing maybe this is one of the new Kalamazoo stoves. Can you post a picture?

Yeah, the insurance man will likely have a cow unless you have documents that specify a simple non-combustible hearth. Without them the stove must be installed with full clearances and a UL test hearthpad I believe.
