If the flue is downdrafting because it is too cool, the smoke has to go somewhere. If the stove backpuffs, the pressure will force smoke out of every seam. This is a bad situation of either wet wood, a poorly drafting flue or both. Next time try using dry kindling and the top down fire starting method. Leave the door ajar until the fire has started burning well.

I'm usually the one 'tending the homefire' --hubby hasn't lit it too many times. He's just out of practice.

I know your problem has passed, I agree with leaveing the door cracked for the first 5 min or so when starting the fire. Took me some trial and error to figure that one out, as I was not on this site yet. Also if your door soots up, as mine did the first few times, when I did not burn properly, clean it with a damp news paper dipped in cold ash. The lady at a local fireplace dealer told me that. Then buff it off with a dry paper, just like waxing a car. It works so well I am thinking of trying it to clean windows in the house.
