We bought a used 2006 Big E pellet stove in recent weeks. It was running just fine until a few days ago when the motor stopped running which forces the stove to shut down completely.

Now in troubleshooting mode, we have done the following:

After disconnecting the auger motor from the auger, we plugged the stove back in and hit START. The motor turns less than ¼ inch and then stops. About 10 secs later, it moves a fraction of an inch and then stops. Then, the stove shuts off completely.

Thinking it was the auger motor, we bought a brand new one that is a replacement to the original one we have, and found that this new motor won’t budge, either, when plugged into the stove. Yet when we plug the old and new auger motors into a different socket away from the stove to test them, they both run fine.

So, we assume it is not the auger motor.

We then bypassed the high temp thermadisk, and the POF as well (as a test, disconnected 1 wire from the thermadisk that should have opened the POF) yet the auger motor connected to the stove does the same thing again. It barely moves for an instant, then stops. The air switch was easy to blow through (the rubber hose) and we gently sucked on the hose, and it made a little pop which is normal. We are hoping the air switch is ok, but wondering if there could be an electrical discrepancy on this, even though it appears to be working fine.

The auger turns by hand fairly good, but towards the last of the cycle, it appears to have small hangup. We’ll take the auger apart to check on this, but we assume this has nothing to do with the motor not operating. We also cleaned both the convection and combustible fans.

Although it’s fuse is still good, could it be the actual control panel board? Or perhaps the convection blower causing the motor to not operate? It appears that we are just not getting enough power to the motor, and have exhausted all troubleshooting properties that our manual suggests.

Any thoughts/ideas on our problem would be greatly appreciated. This is our only heat source.

Thank you.

Are you sure the auger it self is not the problem, if you remove all the pellet does with the motor off does auger spin free? I have work on one of these and they don't like fines or "saw dust" it tends to jam the auger.

Hi John, thanks for the reply. We checked the auger with the motor off and it spins free and clear.

How about the vacuum hose or switch if the hose is leaking or even the hopper door switch they are all wire in the auger motor circuit.

I believe to test the high temp thermodisk and POF switch, you have to jump them together to make a closed circuit. Were any lights flashing when the stove shut down? If not, I think control board is bad
