need help with my new century cw2500x0 fireplace insert

i just installed my new insert and started a fire. the fire burns fine if i have the door cracked open. When i close the door it seems like the fire is starving for air.
The stove has a air control lever but i dont have any drawings to show mechanically how it works. i am unfarmilliar how this works but it seems like something is wrong with the air control lever?

Should be a triangle above control. Wide part of the triangle means more air. Start the fire with door cracked and then close it down once it gets going. Keep and eye on the insert at all times while door is open! See page 9 0f manual.

what is the lever connected to. i had the fire going pretty well then closed the door and 5 minutes later the fire was just smoldering

I'll bet you bought this from Menards on clearance? I'm in Illinois too... I just bought and installed that same stove too.

Like you during the first few test burns to cure the paint, it seemed to smoke a lot.... but I've since learned that it is doing that because a draft has not yet been established.

Just let it burn and once hot exhaust starts to be generated, it will create a draft and suck that smoke up the flue.

Just make sure you are using dry wood. Perhaps do your test burns with scraps of lumber (without paint and no plywood nor waferboard).

Look under the lip as you work the lever. All it is are openings to allow air to enter the insert.

Sometimes this is an indicator of poor wood or poor draft. Often it is a combination of the two that makes for a miserable experience.

How is the stove connected to the chimney? Is there a liner in the chimney and if so, what size? Has the wood been checked for interior dampness?
