I have been studying these for over a year and still not sure which direction to go as there seems to not be too many being offered now days on the market . I have a 1650 sq foot home , single level but not too well insulated, as its built on a crawl space ,think dirt floor on block piers . I have sprayed the block walls with expandable vegetable foam and layered several layers of plastic down but it is what it is . It currently is all electric heat . The place was my grandparents home and they were the 1st occupients 35 years ago . They added insulation in the attic ceiling and tried to seal up air leaks plus added good windows but lets face the fact electric was way cheaper, along with everything else back then and they did not mind running the electric central heat and air to warm the place . The last couple of winters I have froze while still paying outrageous electric bills (like $400 month +) , like everyone else , Especially when it is below freezing outside the central heat will not keep up it seems plus the bill is shocking as I am the only occupant in the home . I've tried small cube heaters in the room I watch tv and sleep but only adds to the bill plus still shivering cold if it is 10 degrees out like last winter for months it seemed ,being close to the ohio river makes for alot of fog and chill . I have had fireplaces and wood stoves in other homes in the past and we are in the heart of coal territory but rather not go that route as my back has about had it from too much lifting in the past already plus I dont have the tractors, bobcats ,backhoes and dump trucks I had in past years due to getting out of that line of work some years back . However , I do like being warm and a fire seems to be unbeatable just like the cavemen found out . I'm on the edge of town but regulations are lax here currently ,still alot of hillbillies that will not leave or be run out even though they shut down the local steel mill a few years back which also took the good paying jobs away -who would have thought ? .
I am looking for a stove that is a true multi-fuel not to be trapped buying pellets that raise in price frequently blaming it on supply chain and whatever else they can justify the increase on . When looking at stoves online ,as no one seems to carry or even have heard of a stove like this , there seems to be limited choices . I would like to be under $2500 dollar mark if possible for something I can get 10+ years out of ,possibly ? If I take care of it maintenance along with minor rebuilds of augers ,motors and boards as long as parts are there for the rebuild ,I can supply the tools and able body . Rather avoid used as not knowing how it was used bothers me for safeties sake with something on fire inside the house ,already scoped ebay out though just for comparisons sake .
So far I see a online retailer with US Stove 5501 and 6041 and that is about it . Id like to stay away from massive weight because of how the home is built being elevated but know the weight was a asset on wood stoves in the past . I have read alot of varying info about US Stoves reviews and don't know what to think ?
Anyone have any suggestions from personal experience owning one of these units , especially if purchased recently and also know they are still selling them as well as guestimate price ? I have seen pinnacle 3000 advertised but wanted a we bit more btu's ,something over 42000 if possible but it seems the US Stoves mentioned are also close to this output . I like the modern designs that don't look like wood stove but more like a modern appliance . Also kinda like the idea of application controlled device using wifi but can make the basic models work too probably being simper and longer lasting in the long run . I work from home now-days so not too concerned about hopper capacity but again monitoring on a application on a phone is alright if that is available . Still not sure if weight is a factor but being able to be close to walls not needing feet of space is good with this layout as it's wall to wall furniture already though I would likely set it on a hearth and use some type of decorated fireproof board behind if necessary . Already I see where it would need a 3 or 4 inch exhaust and 2 inch air hose unless its a combo pipe and I am capable of installing this easily . I have a healthy respect for fire and want to be 100% safe taking no shortcuts . Also how does insurance reacts to these being used for heat -I wondered if it was a noticeable increase in fees as I would notify them after it is installed to still be covered-though should likely do this before hand so there is no surprises ?
Appreciate you time to read and respond -thanks for taking the time . Hopefully I can get this figured out before the snow flies again .
