I was thinking Sassafras too, until he mentioned the unpleasant smell. I have a large one that looks like this that needs to come down, storm took the top half off.
 
The locust I just got recently wasn't near as heavy as I expected. I thought it has a tobacco-ish kinda smell to it, not unpleasant at all. Then again it was cut a month or so ago, not wet at all
