New Hearth Build or Complete current Hearth Build.

Ok fellow Hearth people throw me what you got please. My wife and I are going to do something with our hearth setup but are really not sure what yet so we would like your ideas. Our current pad was a rush to build something before winter . ( Yes the 2*4 under it are from pallets ) I had a couple of older stoves however we never had a lot of money to build a proper hearth and we used a 1/4" hardy-backer wrapped with tin from Tractor Supply. Until I came to this site I had many misconceptions about heating with wood not the least of which was what a proper hearth should be. Well needless to say I learned a lot and built this pad in order to not burn our house to the ground. I am suprised we did not after all those years with a 1/4" death pad under our stoves.

Any how that is the setup to this current issue. We are debating sliding the current pad to the wall and building up the sides right and left with something. Our idea is to buy / build a new pad that is less space taking and preferably a corner pad and then do the walls with a similar material. What ideas do you guys have ? Anything goes we are not going to do the build till spring now.

This is what we have in mind for a new Hearth. I can tile very well and even small brick jobs well but something off this scale might look like 2 year old did it .

Pete, build one. You'll get to enjoy all those things each time you burn. A few things I'd add. First maker it bigger then you'd think you'll need. I like a raised hearth. Mostly so you don't have to get on your knees to load and check the stove. Believe me this could be the most important. Also think about adding tool holders, Todd has then and looks good while being functional.


Above all again do it yourself, nothing like reminding yourself of that pride you put into it in three first place. Plus you can source cool materials, like hand tossed brick, fine slate or tile, or heck go buy soap stone and do something just crazy.

Thanks stump branch I think I am gonna have to see Todd's I can't remember what it looked like. I like the Idea of raising it up too.

Pete and I will be talking about this further and do appreciate other ideas. One that I have but haven't yet thrown at Pete is to remove the window! Not sure if this would set well with the Mrs but it is an idea and would give more space for the brick or tile on the walls.

Thanks Dennis ! I am not to sure how she feels about the window yet I will talk to her about it. That is a good idea and would also allow for the recessed lights above that she wants.
