New milestone

We were getting the straight truck serviced and the owner asked if we knew anyone that heated with wood. Of course my eyes and ears perked up. He said he had the best deal around. Now I'm sceptical because everyone says that. So I inquired. He said he needed some work for is employees; $110 a cord but must take two cord at a time. Of course I said sure! What a perfect delivery too. I've had five different people over the years but never had anyone drop it right where I needed it.

This added to the cord a few weeks ago from another guy,


Brings me to three cord for the 2014 - 2015 winter which is the most I ever had this far ahead.

16 ft by 4 ft by 5 ft high give or take a bit.

For the first time I have 6 cord total! Three for 2013-2014 winter and now three for 2014-2015!

Wind side. The front two are 11 x 4 x 5 1/2 and 7 x 4 x 5.

The back left was bought May 2012 and is 11 x 4 x 5 1/2. I'm not sure why I end up with 5 1/2 high. I'm 5' 5" so I guess it is the height I can reach.

I feel better now. Thank you for reading. My wife says "when you want to hear about my shopping sprees then I will listen to you about your addiction". My neighbors want to put me on hoarders buried alive. My family is confused. I needed to tell someone who understands.

What sort of house are you heating with 3 cord a year? Just curious as a newbie who will heat for the first time next burn season.

Nice job, but there is one problem, it only gets worse!

Less than 2100 square foot. We thought we might have kids when we got married and bought the house so its a four bedroom house and we only occupy one . I can usually keep upper 70's in here.

Ok, I am planning on 3-4 cord in my 1974 sq ft., 1954 built one story ranch. No kids here either and loving it.

What is interesting to me is I search Craigslist and see 200 - 350 per cord. My first year I paid the most 180 a cord then driving around a contractor had a sign out a mile from my house he wanted 150 a cord since it was only a mile away. Then two years ago in talking at work a guy mentioned his cousin sells it for $130 a cord only catch is you get it when he gets it. That has been fine with me, I usually would call once a month starting in September for the following winter. This worked out great because at that time I was moving that winters wood to the deck he would be bringing me more so I had a good rotating system. Again just in talking I got this deal. As they say "the best time to shop is when you don't need it". I seen a sign today "$5 per bundle of quality hardwood". I couldn't resist; I stopped to ask how much is in a bundle, he showed me the bags "about five to six pieces about same as you get at the convenience store". I came home and thought, man I could make a bundle on a bundle but I just can't part with my wooden gold.

I would love to take some time and take the saws for a walk for some scrounging but with the prices I'm getting for now I just can't justify it. I figure all good things come to an end but seems to me wood prices follow fuel oil since it is the big source of heating, though decreasing as Natural gas got so cheap. As heating oil goes up, so does wood demand, therefore the price goes up. Ever since Tropical Storm Lee and then again Sandy came though there is a lot of people selling firewood.

From my limited knowledge of MA, I'm sure there are much more wood burners up there.

I have a good wood guy and stayed with him and it has paid dividends.. He has kept the price for me as I have gotten him many customers plus he gives me extra wood.. In the long run he stays in business and I get the wood I need.. It's all good
