I'm burning chestnut coal in my Tassco boiler, is there a rule of thumbs when you should shake your fire down, I want to keep a good bed of coals to protect the shop made grates. Thanks.

When I used to burn coal I would shake the grates till I got a little bit of red coals. But this was with cast grates.
