Next week I will be going away. The place we are going has 2 "fire places". One is a soap stone pizza oven and the other is a fire place I believe. The owners of this property request not to use paper to start a fire. They have fire starters available for a nominal fee.

Why would someone not want us to use paper to start fire with?

Maybe they had a problem with screen plugging in the past?

Used paper in the pizza oven at work. Everyday. The oven is now real old.

Both answers are equally possible.

Does the place have cedar shake roofs?

They didn't say they have had a problem. But who knows.

The owners might just be a little crazy about their property. No shoes allowed inside. And there is a booklet about the use of the place that will be left for us

Ding!

We rented a condo in NC one weekend while skiing. They had a note on the fireplace not to use Duraflame type logs.........guess what we brought with us because we knew there was a fireplace....they went out as ashes:p

Perhaps they are just being cautious since paper going up the flue pipe is know to start chimney fires.

Perhaps there could be something to their request. Never thought about cedar roof. Never the less I will honor it.

What's so crazy about that?
Just that you are going away and would never think it would be one of the first things you are told 2 weeks before you go.
No shoes are allowed in my house either

No shoes ... and usually no pants ... well I do put on shorts when guests are over ... sometimes jeans even. :)

I often request that people attending my place aluminum paper on their heads. I often get confused looks ;)

Likely don't want to clog chimney cap and as for the shoes: maybe it has hardwood floors and shoes+pebbles= nice scratches.

I disagree 100%. I started fires with newspapers for years and sometimes had to clean my cap towards the end of the year. When i switched to starters, that problem never returned. My cap does not have a screen either. I think its better practice to use starters, whether its super cedars, fatwood, pine cones, etc.

I guess it's possible, but I burn marginal wood(cut the same year) and always have started fires with paper. I always clean my cap when I clean the flue as part of my SOP because it usually needs it anyway. Caps should always be inspected, so cleaning one is not a big deal in my book.

Willing to bet they are not being anal about it. They have to deal with the dumbest of society. Like those who use christmas paper or an entire sunday newspaper to try and get a fire started and do nothing but leave a mess of paper and unburnt wood. It's probably hard to imagine for most folks that are logical but there are some very special renters out there.

We were at a very nice resort once that only allowed Duraflame logs to be burned in the fireplace. I asked and was told that it was all about safety and that some guests were trying to create bonfires inside and it was an insurance & safety issue. One of us might use a few pages of newspaper to start a fire and some other idiot might use 100 pages all at once. Hard to believe but some people need rules when they ain't got brains.!!! so all of us suffer.

Bring your own fire starter.....

Maybe they want to sell you fire starters >>
+1

We stayed in a suite in Atlanta once, and they had fireplaces. They only allowed Duraflame as well, but the purchase price at the counter was the same as the store down the road, so they weren't trying to rip us off. We burned one just for the ambiance.

If they are using the pizza oven for cooking there could be some concern over the paper "ash", coated paper is usually 50% fillers like clay and titanium dioxide. Probably not harmful but I don't know how appetizing it is.

Most 'newspaper' uses soybean dyes, relatively harmless.
But, yeah, no telling what idiot will substitute the newspaper for a glossy magazine, or glossy inserts.
