New insert being installed into a external chimney (chimney is actually bricked over on the outside with a much prettier brick, there is probably a 1-2ft air gap between and then the top part runs through a knee wall).

As much as I want to, I'm just not going to have time to make a Block off plate before Thursday and its killing me how much efficiency I'm going to be leaving on the table.

I have about 11 extra rockwool batts from an insulation project earlier. Will it help at all to tuck the rockwool just behind the stove faceplate(right up against the stove body and inner fireplace wall). Im thinking it will help slow the draft from between the brick joints?

Thoughts? Anything else I should do to help.

It will help to put some behind the stove. Maybe ask the installer in advance to fabricate a block-off plate? If not, it can be retrofitted as a 2 piece if there is room to work above the insert. And if that's not good, disconnect the insert, pull it, and install when you can.

Installer definitely didnt want to do it himself, at his age he isn't looking to do much beyond service and regular installs.

I marked the dimensions so I can make one later I suppose.

To answer your question, yes, it will help to use Roxul. In my previous house there was no block-off and using Roxul on the smoke shelf and behind the insert made a noticeable difference. New house has a double-sided fireplace (ugh), so block-off was mandatory.
