Question:

What exactly are the laws concerning gas fireplace inserts and logs in New York State, both vent-free and vented? We currently have a fireplace with a masonry chimney that has a gas connection in the fireplace. Are their ANY products we can buy that are legal to put in this fireplace?

Answer:

Well, legal is a funny word, since these are not actually laws, but codes or guidelines. NY state has recently accepted Vent-Free appliances, so things are changing fast. At this point (7/2000) many of the retailers you will visit will offer these products.
