Experiment: Next time you are out getting oak for firewood, also collect branch wood - leave them long say 4'. Now when you get home, dig a trench 3' deep and 6' wide In a shady spot. Drill holes in the branch wood and insert shitake mushroom plugs (seal with wax). I know Oregon St. Univ. sells them.

Throw the branches in the hole, spray water into the hole, and cover the hole with black poly or whatever. Peal the plastic back and water every once in a while. Will the mushroom grow? Maybe extend the poly down into the hole? Anybody done this?
